Nature’s Reason Behind the Dark System
Mother Nature give birds and animals the best possible advantage to survive through the harshest times of the year. When winter arrives, pigeons must be in best position to manage the lack of food and extremely high predation. They cannot have any disadvantages place upon them by molting.
When we apply the Dark System, we are tricking the pigeon's biological clock to think the winter is coming. Programmed into the pigeon DNA, is when the days shorten, winter is not far behind. The shortened days cause the pigeons to go into a rabid body molt.
Pigeons cannot survive winter without a fresh set of full body feathers. The shortened day also tells the pigeons to stop molting wing flights. Pigeons that are missing wing flights are likely to be preyed upon by predators because they have less of an ability for speed and flight. The high calorie intake needed for the body molt is not available in winter anyway.
Now we combine the completed body molt, with the full wing, and the pigeon has the best odds of surviving the winter. This pigeon also has a greater chance of racing successfully with complete full feathers. When a pigeon is molting body feathers it has less buoyancy, it is less aerodynamic and has higher energy needs. Not a great spot to be in during winter or racing when speed and agility is most important and calorie sources can be limited.
When the wing molt stops the pigeon can be generate the most power during flight. Missing flight feathers will not only cause loss of speed and agility but also show a sign of weakness for predators. When predators attack a flock, they must single out a bird and focus the attack on that one bird.
Anything odd on the pigeon in the flock of pigeons will cause the hawk or falcon to focus on that odd bird. This may be a missing flight, an odd color or worst case a bird struggling to keep up. In a flock of blue bars, the splash pigeon will be singled out. In a flock of splashes the solid blue will be singled out by the hawk.
